Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and DOL
Establish Partnership to Promote Awareness of Labor Laws
WASHINGTONThe U.S.
Department of Labor (DOL) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
today signed an agreement to work together to promote greater awareness of and
compliance with DOLs employment laws. The agreement is the first signed
under the departments new Partnerships for Compliance Assistance Program
(PCAP).
As a partner, SHRM will work with DOL to educate human resource
professionals and business owners about resources available to help them
understand and comply with Americas employment laws.
Human resource professionals are often charged with making sure their
employers are in compliance with our laws, said Secretary of Labor Elaine
L. Chao. Partnering with SHRM will help us to deliver valuable
information to workers and employers nationwide and to further our goal of
ensuring fair, safe and healthy work environments for Americas
workforce.
I am pleased that SHRMs expanded relationship with the DOL
will further build on the Societys efforts to deliver quality, useful
information to HR professionals, said SHRM President and CEO Susan R.
Meisinger, SPHR. Compliance issues remain one of the most complex areas
for organizations to navigate today.
Under the partnership, DOL and SHRM will collaborate on promoting new
compliance assistance tools to better serve human resource professionals and
publicizing compliance assistance information through Web sites, print and
other electronic media and publications. In addition, DOL and SHRM
representatives will participate in forums, conferences and stakeholder
meetings to help increase understanding and compliance in the workplace.
DOLs Office of Compliance Assistance Policy (OCA) established PCAP
to complement DOLs public outreach efforts and help protect the wages,
health benefits, retirement security and safety and health of Americas
workforce. Secretary Chao established OCA as part of DOLs Compliance
Assistance Initiative launched in June of 2002.
SHRM is the worlds largest association devoted to human resource
management representing more than 185,000 individual members. SHRMs
mission is both to serve human resource management professionals and to advance
the profession. SHRM currently has more than 500 affiliated chapters within the
U.S. and members in more than 120 countries.
