Primary Topic: Rigid Pavement Description: This report documents recommendations for the design and construction of portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. The positive outcomes of this study are the recommendations for improving PCC pavement design and the development of prediction models to be used in pavement design and management. A study has been conducted to evaluate and analyze portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements in order to develop recommendations for the design and construction of long-lived concrete pavements. It involved a detailed evaluation and analysis of the PCC pavement data in the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database using a variety of means to determine the beneficial effects of design features and construction practices on long-term performance. Emphasis was placed on identifying those specific design features that can be included during design to improve the performance of PCC pavements under various combinations of environmental and traffic loading conditions, and for different subgrade support conditions. The study focused on the development of practical recommendations that can be easily implemented by highway agencies to increase pavement life. This volume provides a concise summary of the results that were obtained from the study. It includes an overview of the engineering and statistical analyses that were conducted and presents results that can be used by State highway agencies to obtain high-performance PCC pavements. Implementation of the recommendations will increase the reliability of PCC pavements. This report is the first in a series of three volumes from the study.
