DEM Conducts Public Outreach Effort, Asks Public to Notify Department if They Suspect Presence of Invasive Asian Beetle (and Reminds Campers and Other Vacationers to Only Use Local Firewood)

Through a cooperative effort with the USDA and Animal Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS), the Department of Environmental Management is coordinating a comprehensive public outreach and detection program for the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB). ALB is an invasive insect that came to the United States in wooden shipping crates from China and Korea more than ten years ago. It affects hardwood shade trees such as maple, ash, birch, willow and elm by boring into the core of the tree and eventually killing it. This beetle has the potential of wiping out thousands of the state's trees if it goes undetected. (More info, also Cranston)

DEM: August 7 West Nile/EEE Status Update

DEM announces that test results from all 71 mosquito pools, or samples, from 35 traps set statewide during the week of July 27 are negative for both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. (More info)

DEM to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Waterfowl Season, Falconry, Park and Management Area Regulations on August 27

DEM will hold a public hearing on proposed regulations governing the upcoming migratory waterfowl hunting season and the practice of falconry, and park and management area regulations on Thursday, August 27. The hearing will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the North Kingstown Community Center on Beach Street in North Kingstown, off Route 1A just south of Wickford. (More info)

DEM Announces Appointment of James Ball as Emergency Response Coordinator

DEM Director W. Michael Sullivan, Ph.D. today announced the appointment of James Ball as environmental response coordinator. Ball has held this position in an acting capacity since December 2008. (More info)

DEM and Town of Narragansett Begin to Survey Local Residents on Renewable Energy, Construction of Wind Turbines

DEM, in partnership with the Town of Narragansett, is beginning to survey local residents to gather their opinions on renewable energy and the possible installation of three to six wind turbines on state and/or Town properties in Narragansett. (More info)

DEM Soliciting Applications Statewide for Targeted Brownfield Assessment Projects

DEM is soliciting applications from across Rhode Island to initiate allocation of $400,000 in Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) funding. This grant is being supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 and will be spent over the next three years. (More info)
