This present-day scene shows the desert landscapes for which the park is famous; this land also holds evidence of ancient swamps and fossils.
When Big Bend was chosen to become a national park it was the biological and geologic diversity here that helped sway policy makers.

The most recently named peak in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park is Mount Huffman. Mount Huffman (6,069'/1,850
m) at the head of Green Gulch was named in honor of Calvin Huffman. As state representative in 1941, Huffman was instrumental in the establishment of Big Bend National Park.
