Trails
Accessing Your Public Lands
Some trails are available for non-motorized activities. One example is Anchorage's Campbell Tract, an area with an extensive non-motorized trail network used for biking, hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. A popular winter area is the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks. The White Mountains has 12 public use cabins scattered along 200 miles of multiple-use winter trails used for dog mushing, snowmachining, and skiing. The White Mountains area also offers several popular summer trails.
Be aware that you share the trails with other users besides people when traveling in the Alaska backcountry. Watch out for hazards such as bears and moose that often use developed trails for travel. Be aware of your surroundings and plan ahead so you don't surprise a bear sow and cub or a mother moose and calf when traveling along remote trails.
