Propylene Safety and Health Topics:
Propylene

General Description
Synonyms: Propene; 1-Propene; Methyl Ethene; Methylethylene

    OSHA IMIS Code Number: P249

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number: 115-07-1

NIOSH, Registry of Toxic Effects (RTECS) Identification Number: UC6740000

Department of Transportation Regulation Number (49 CFR 172.101) and Guide: 1075 115

Chemical Description and Physical Properties: Colorless Gas
      molecular formula: C3H6
      molecular weight: 42.09
      boiling point: -47.7°C
      vapor pressure: 760 mm Hg @ -47.7°C
      melting point: -185.2°C
Potentially hazardous incompatibilities: Incompatible with oxygen. Reacts with oxides of nitrogen to form an explosive product. Reacts violently with oxidizers. Explodes on contact with trifluoromethyl hypofluorite. Explosive polymerization is initiated by lithium nitrate + sulfur dioxide. May also form an ozonide which is explosive at ambient temperatures.
Exposure Limits
American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV): Simple Asphyxiant; Appendix A4 (Not Classifiable as a Human Carcinogen)
Health Factors
Potential symptoms: Drowsiness; unconsciousness; asphyxia; frostbite (contact with liquid).

Health Effects: Explosive (HE18) CNS effects (HE7); Asphyxiant (HE17).

    Affected organ: CNS

Note: Excreted mainly by exhalation. A small amount is metabolized (possibly by CYP2E1) to propylene oxide, a known carcinogen in animals. However, propylene is not carcinogenic in rats and mice.
