EPA works with state, local and tribal authorities to monitor the quality of water throughout the nation. State pollution control agencies and Indian tribes have key monitoring responsibilities and conduct vigorous monitoring programs. Involvement in water quality monitoring is not limited to large governmental agencies, though. Many local governments and watershed groups conduct water quality monitoring, and every citizen can be involved in the monitoring and assessment process; whether through collecting or analyzing samples, research programs, volunteer monitoring efforts, or data analysis and watershed modeling.
