Amid the worsening economic downturn, overall charitable giving in the USA decreased by about 2% in 2008. The number of adults in 2008 performing volunteer service through an organization rose by about a million from 2007, to 61.8 million.

The Federal Trade Commission gets many complains of charity fraud, but the true number is probably far greater, because most victims of charity fraud don't realize they've been defrauded, an FTC official says.
That special glow you get from giving to those less fortunate than you shines just a bit brighter when your contributions are tax-deductible.
