Pining for the Porcupine: Musings from the TOS Rocksprings Trip – July 11-12, 2009

Birders are a hearty and hardy bunch. They brave whatever nature throws at them in their quest to see birds. There are oft-told tales of bone-chilling winds on a seawatch at the Point at Gambell or below-zero temperatures in Duluth during a January trip. Heat is the other extreme, and it’s one that keeps many Texas birders home during the brunt of the summer months.

In Arizona and west Texas, birders can often climb the “sky islands” in order to stay comfortable all day as the heat builds on the desert floor. No such escape is possible in the middle of July near Rocksprings, Texas, however. Rocksprings is about 50 miles southwest of Junction, in the southwest reaches of the Hill Country.

The Texas Ornithological Society and the birders of the state of Texas lost a legend when Edward A, Kutac Jr., 87, passed away June 3, 2009. Ed served as president of TOS and the Travis Audubon Society. Many new birders and naturalists were introduced to our shared passion through the field trips he lead and classes he taught. He was the author of several books including Birder's Guide to Texas.
