100 Years, 100 Stories

To help commemorate the Glacier National Park Centennial in 2010, the Centennial Program is calling for experiential short stories about the park to be published in a book.

“We are looking for stories that reflect experiences and revive memories that people have had with Glacier National Park to celebrate the upcoming centennial,” said Wendy Hill, Executive Director of the Glacier Association.

Our committee is hosting an open call for entries by amateur and established writers, ranging from short haikus to stories 2,000 words in length.

Entries may be submitted by to the Centennial Coordinator through March 1, 2009. There is no entry fee to submit stories. Of the entries received, 100 will be selected and published in a book to benefit the Centennial Program.

In addition, we have also posted a link to a short centennial video: Check out the two minute centennial teaser clip that we put together! It is high quality film of the various integral elements that make up Glacier National Park. Oh, and the Centennial Program mission is highlighted throughout it: Celebrate, Inspire, Engage...

Call for Art Entries

As we all know, our National Parks have a long standing history with Art.  Many will argue that it was art that began the preservation movement of protecting our most treasured landscapes.  We all have a little artist in us- whether we like photography, sketching, sewing, digital art, or even story telling!  Art has become a favorite past time in the American culture and we hope to continue that tradition as we celebrate Glacier National Park's cetennial.

With that said, as part of the Glacier National Park Centennial celebration, the centennial committee is holding a juried art competition to continue the tradition of preserving our heritage for the future, through art.

Entries in the form of digital files are due by March 1, 2009 and may be submitted in any art medium, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, textile and graphic design. Any entries not in these categories may fit under the general category.

Visit www.glaciercentennial.org for complete details and entry forms.

Glacier Times

Glacier's Timeline has been posted on the Official Centennial website! The timeline is a mere glimpse of Glacier National Park over the years, through a cultural lens. If you have history that you would like to add, please share it with us- and we will do our best to incorporate it.

This timeline was created with the use and help of Glacier National Park's Archives Office, the Glacier National Park Digital Photo File, Glacier Park, Inc's Digital Photos, and C.W. Guthrie's new book, Glacier National Park: The First 100 Years, Farcountry Press.

Snow can fall at any time of the year in Glacier

Did You Know?
Did you know that eight inches of snow fell during one night in Glacier's high country in August, 2005? The weather forced hundreds of backpackers out of the backcountry.
