DoDEA Announces MCEC Space Camp Scholarship Opportunit
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is an active participant in the nationwide and global endeavor to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for American students in the United States and in military communities worldwide.
As a Department of Defense Field Activity, DoDEA is widely engaged in stimulating interest and improving the competence of the youth of this nation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields–at all levels of education. We encourage DoDEA students to participate in any and all programs that improve their competencies in the STEM curricula and encourage application and participation in The Military Child Education Coalition's Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial NASA Space Camp Scholarship.
The Military Child Education Coalition has created a Space Camp scholarship for students enrolled in grades 6-9 who are children of an active duty military parent. The Bernard Curtis Brown II Space Camp scholarship covers full tuition, meals, lodging, program materials, and round-trip transportation from the student's home base to Space Camp.
Space Camp is a 5-day program offered in Huntsville, Alabama that provides a unique, hands-on approach to learning science outside the classroom. For more information about Space Camp, visit its website at www.spacecamp.com.
The Military Child Education Coalition's Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial NASA Space Camp Scholarship is named for an 11-year-old Washington, D.C., area military-connected child who was killed aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when terrorists crashed it into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. At the time of his death, Brown was en route to California to participate in Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a National Geographic Society-funded marine research project at the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
The Military Child Education Coalition is a non-profit, world-wide organization that identifies the challenges that face the highly mobile military child, increases awareness of these challenges in military and educational communities and initiates and implements programs to meet the challenges. MCEC's goal is to level the educational playing field for military children wherever they are located around the world and to serve as a model for all highly mobile children.
The Department of Defense Education Activity operates two distinct educational systems providing quality pre-kindergarten through 12th grade programs: The DoD Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) for dependents in locations within the United States and its territories, possessions, and commonwealths, and the DoD Dependents Schools (DoDDS) for dependents residing overseas. The mission of the DoDEA is to provide, in military communities worldwide, exemplary educational programs that inspire and prepare all students for success in a global environment.
