As these words are being written, thousands of ruins in the Southwest are threatened with deterioration and collapse. Some are World Heritage Sites, others are places of spiritual meaning for tribes; all are gems of the national park system. Former Park Service Director Roger Kennedy calls the situation "an undeniable crisis in care."
