Clark to Relieve Johnson as CNO

Navy Adm. Jay L. Johnson will be relieved as chief of Naval Operations and will retire from active duty during a ceremony to be held in Tecumseh Court, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., on Friday, July 21, 2000, at 10 a.m. EDT. Navy Adm. Vern Clark has been selected by President Clinton to relieve Johnson.

Senator John S. McCain will be the ceremony's principal speaker. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and Secretary of the Navy Richard J. Danzig also will offer remarks. Other members of the official party include Army Gen. Henry H. Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Navy Vice Adm. John R. Ryan, U.S. Naval Academy superintendent; and Navy Rear Adm. Anderson B. Holderby, chief of Chaplains.
