November 22, 1992 Tornado Outbreak

On November 22, 1992, Indiana was hit by 15 tornadoes which destroyed dozens of buildings, damaged hundreds more with damage estimates of 12 million dollars. Fortunately, there were no fatalities and only six injuries. The tornadoes occurred between 2 pm and 6 pm EST in Central and Eastern Indiana and represent the largest tornado outbreak for November. These tornadoes were spawned by a strong weather system that yielded 94 tornadoes from Texas to North Carolina that weekend.
Here are some brief notes on the more significant Indiana tornadoes:
1. The first tornado touched down at 235 pm EST northwest of Bloomington near Ellettsville. The tornado packed winds up to 200 mph as it plowed a 5 mile long and 1/2 mile wide damage path over a 9 minute time span.
2. The second tornado touched down at 250 pm northwest of Greencastle near Morton and traveled northeast before dissipating near Parkersburg in Southern Montgomery county at 315 pm. This tornado packed winds up to 200 mph on its 12 mile long and half mile wide path.
3. The next tornado descended at 255 pm west of Martinsville in Morgan county. This tornado tracked northeast near State Road 67 for 15 miles before lifting near Mooresville at 320 pm. The tornado, reaching a half mile in width, came close to damaging a power plant in Centerton.
4. The next tornado hit the east side of Indianapolis at 45th and Fall Creek Parkway at 345 pm. This tornado had wind speeds up to 200 mph on its 9 mile long and 1/4 mile wide track. It crossed I-465 at 56th and downed numerous trees at Fort Harrison.
5. At 405 pm, the next tornado touched down southwest of Shelbyville in Shelby county then tracked northeast for 10 miles to just north of Shelbyville. This tornado also produced winds of 150 to 200 mph and blew over a semi-trailer truck on I-74 near Shelbyville.
Other tornadoes occurred about 10 miles south of the Terre Haute and Crawfordsville. Two tornadoes occurred in Southeast Hamilton county just northeast of Indianapolis near Clarksville and Lapel. Two other tornadoes occurred east of Indianapolis about 6 miles south of Greenfield and about 6 miles north of Anderson. Further south, there was a tornado southeast of Columbus near Waynesburg, very close to a tornado occurrence earlier in the Spring of 1992. Finally, the remaining three tornadoes occurred in extreme Eastern Indiana not far from Portland, Richmond and Lawrenceburg.
