The Lakers began their history in Detroit, Michigan, before they became the Minneapolis Lakers based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They were founded in 1947 as part of the National Basketball League. In 1948, the franchise joined the NBA. The Minneapolis-based team won their first five league championships before eventually moving to Los Angeles in 1960. While in L.A., the Lakers were home to some of the NBA's most cherished players including Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
In the 1960s, the NBA was defined by the Lakers' storied rivalry with the Boston Celtics. Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, two future Hall of Famers, led the Lakers to the NBA Finals six times that decade, only to lose to the Celtics each time. Their success continued into the 1970s. Wilt Chamberlain came over from the Philadelphia 76ers, and it wasn't long before they won the NBA Championship title in 1972.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Lakers continued to be a perennial contender. Iconic players such as Magic Johnson and Kurt Rambis helped lead them to five titles in the 80s, including several over their bitter East Coast rivals. Members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, the Lakers rivals include the Los Angeles Clippers, intradivisional Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings as well as the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs.
Kobe Bryant has been an unquestioned icon of the Lakers franchise, bringing them five more trophies between 2000 and 2010. A high point of the Lakers' history came when Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal led the team to three straight NBA Titles from 2000-2002. The Lakers hold a staggering number of titles and awards including over 15 Basketball Hall of Fame players, more that 17 championship titles, at least eight MVP awards and more than 30 conference titles.
