Why doesn't Social Security provide more than the top 1000 names on the internet?
There are 2 reasons for limiting our data to the top 1000 names.
- If we were to provide more than the top 1000 names, these names would be
less popular and hence the number born in a particular year might be very small.
We need to be sensitive to privacy issues, and so we can not include names
with only a few occurrences. Thus we limit our national lists of names by sex
and year of birth to the top 1000 names. Similarly, we limit our state lists to
the top 100 names.
- If we could expand our data to, say, the top 2000 or more names,
the performance of our internet servers would degrade to the point where many
people would be unable to access our our data.
Even with our 1000 name limit, you may have experienced slow responses.
What percentage of all names are represented in the top 1000 names?
For U.S. births in 2008, the top 1000 names represent about 74
percent of all names.
