Medical Enlisted Portal Debuts October 1, 2008

WASHINGTON -- An online communications tool designed for enlisted service members in medical fields will be brought live October 1, 2008, as planned.

“This is only a start,” said Enlisted Portal Coordinator Sgt. 1st Class Helen Gillespie. “As each area of the portal grows, and with a consistent need for updated news, the portal must maintain an ongoing stream of up-to-date and usable information.”

In preparation for the portal going live, Gillespie has managed the publication and data analysis of a questionnaire published on the Military Health System Web site. The questionnaire received over 500 responses with comments ranging from cautions of misuse to excited expressions anticipating an ideal way to share information.

“Lessons learned” topped the portal wish list with 74 percent of respondents marking it as the number one desired feature, according to Gillespie. Over 65 percent of respondents illustrated a desire for a forum with a variety of military subjects. The chat room feature received less than 20 percent which made it the feature with the lowest desirability.

The information Gillespie gathered from the MHS sampling led to the current portal design, which features an “open to the public” portal landing page and a link to access a forum that will be restricted to registered enlisted members. Upon entering the forum, users will register with basic information about themselves and their position in their military service. When making forum posts, they will have the choice of using their real names or an alias.

The most requested tool, Lessons Learned, will be accessed by a special link to the DoD-wide Joint Lessons Learned Information System. Before posting a Lessons Learned item into the system, users will be able to vet their submission in a forum area, according to Gillespie.

Other sections on the main portal page will include pages to praise fellow comrades, post calendar events, search educational opportunities, and submit jokes or amusing stories from the field of medicine.

“The entire project is all about the needs of enlisted members,” said Gillespie. “We will start with a handful of links on the portal page and forum topic areas and then expand as participation increases and preferences are expressed.”

Portal users will first be asked to help choose a name for the portal in an online poll. The name suggestions available in the poll were submitted during the initial questionnaire.

Leaders of the Military Health System stress that the portal’s forum is a candid way for enlisted service members to respectfully express themselves or ask questions without fear of retribution.

Great idea, but another website for Soldiers to find? How will this page interface with the Army's 68W (medic) website in MODS and the one that is currently being setup on the AMEDD Center & School website? Too many webistes with similar info and some may have conflicting information for Soldiers in the field. Need to figure out a way to either have one central locatoin or have pointers to from one page to another.

Do you really believe that a vindictive senior won't exact "retrbution" once s/he learns of something that does not suit or sit well with them? Regardless of security measures employed, there will always be "leaks" and seniors will always have a method to learn what is not wanted to be disclosed.

Mo, I can't agree with you more. There are more silos of information in the Government than in an Idaho farm community. This is one reason I became passionate about the Joint Lessons Learned Information System software. I have linked to it on the main portal landing page. This software has the ability to store and search across multiple government agencies and military organizations.

There may be other software programs out there that can do the same. I'm just not familiar with them.

Perhaps as employees of the American taxpayer we can work toward interoperability, and collaboration. I would vote for that!

Unfortunately, according to my experience, you are correct. However, our standards of conduct have been stated.

After clicking on the Forum Access icon at the top right of the landing page, questions are asked for the purpose of limiting membership to enlisted members. This should limit the trickle-down effect of misery. Yet, it still exposes the enlisted membership to the wrath of senior enlisted. Three things should help alleviate this.

1. Close monitoring of submissions by Portal Coordinator
2. Aliases are allowed
3. Submitters can hide their profile

Understand that long before online forums were invented, there was misery from leaders who didn’t understand either a situation or didn’t understand the individual’s motives. Whether it’s this forum or one of the many other forums across the Internet, I’m hoping that the users can learn strong leadership skills from others in the community by their interaction.

The foremost purpose in establishing this forum is to discover who the people are who are doing the work, and what challenges they are facing implementing the policies and directions that come from DoD level through all the levels of leadership.

As there will always be the poor, there will always be the poor in spirit and professionalism who can not take a situation and learn from it, but choose to get defensive and vindictive instead.

If you are an enlisted person in the medical community, please join our forum. If not, please check back once or twice a week and view our landing page. It will change as often as time permits.

Ms. Treves:
I'm attempting to get a good answer for you. Though our private emails, I understand that your issue may be better answered by the people in the California National Guard since it doesn't appear to be a question that falls under the Military Health System. Through continued email conversations and some research, I'll try my best to help you coordinate with someone who can give you good information.
