With Word Processing Comes Prosperity

Through a USAID-sponsored Internet access program in Turkmenistan, people with disabilities such as Lachin Yagshyeva are learning skills and finding gainful employment.
Unemployed and with cerebral paralysis, Lachin Yagshyeva came to USAID’s Internet access and training program center in Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan, looking for a way to help herself become financially secure.
Today, she is offering private word processing services from the convenience of her home. Lachin’s success comes as a result of her graduation from USAID’s computer productivity training. She mastered computer technology and typing skills during a series of Internet communication training courses at the center.
Lachin has since successfully completed her first order, compiling a set of professional documents for a local entrepreneur applying for his business registration. In addition to offering word processing, she can also assist clients with creating electronic versions of paper manuscripts and historical documents.
Graduating from the course has improved her quality of life and integrated her into her community. “Before my training, I was subsisting on a government support check, which was very little. Now I have a chance to earn money independently and create an independent life for myself. All of this is because of the IT training USAID provided me,” she said.
