GLIN Maps & GIS Welcome, guest [login] [register] Overview | Regional GIS Data | Map Explorer | Map Gallery | Questions/comments  Overview Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a term used to describe the creation, manipulation, analysis, and storage of spatial data. This technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with geographic data through visualization and maps. These attributes distinguish GIS from other information systems and make it valuable for exploring options, explaining results, and deciding strategies.  Source: SeaWiFS Project, NASA/FSFC, and GeoEye The mission of GLIN Maps and GIS is to provide a centralized location to discover, publish, and acquire geospatial data for areas within the Great Lakes region. The site has four major components: 1) a portal for viewing and exploring the Great Lakes and associated data layers, 2) a data portal (GLIN GIS) through which GIS and geospatial data for the Great Lakes can be published and acquired, 3) a gallery of downloadable images depicting Great Lakes geophysical data, and 4) a collection of links and tools intended to connect users to additional resources relating to Great Lakes datasets. Regional GIS Data Regional GIS data is served transparently through the Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN) GIS Clearinghouse (what is the GLIN GIS?). The GLIN GIS functions as a gateway to provide regional geospatial datasets that are current with National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and FGDC metadata standards. GLIN GIS-distributed geospatial data adheres to known, OGC standards which fosters data interoperability and facilities the sharing of data throughout the region. Data are available via WMS and WFS services, in addition to PDF, KML (Google Earth), and GML. Layers are also ingested into Geospatial One Stop (GOS) for broader dissemination and aggregation. Users can search for datasets through the GLIN GIS by topic, geography, organization, or by upload date. Registered users and organizations are able to publish, at no cost, regional geospatial data through the GLIN GIS, making their data broadly accessable to the region at large. Interactive maps are available for Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Superior, and Lake Saint Clair. You can also build your own map, selecting the layers you wish to display for the region. Map Gallery The map gallery allows you to view and download both historical and contemporary images relevant to the geophysical properties of the Great Lakes region. Questions, comments, concerns?
