NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS) is involved in many events of interest to the public. Some, like large oil spills, recovery of the Civil War era USS Monitor, or marine mammal strandings, often make national headlines. Others, like predicting harmful algal blooms, designating no-take protected areas in national marine sanctuaries, or routine nautical charting and tide predictions, generate less national attention. But these activities and events still are important to coastal residents and visitors and those who depend on the coastal environment for their livelihood. This section offers four types of news reports on activities and events related to the mission of NOS.
Each week, there are many interesting developments throughout NOS that reflect the diversity of its mission. Read news capsules in this section to keep tabs on news in ocean and coastal science and technolgy related to NOS. NOAA issues many press releases each week. Releases pertinent to NOS are presented here.
NOS regularly contributes content to the main NOAA Web site. This page provides access to NOS stories that are posted on the NOAA Web site. Read these 500- to 1000-word stories to learn more about science or technolgies connected to the NOS mission. Wavebreaking News is a multimedia presentation of stories related to the mission and activities of NOS. Running time for each edition is between three and five minutes. Transcripts of each story, links to related NOAA and NOS Web sites, and contact information are provided. Wavebreaking News is available at high- and low-speed Internet connections in two different movie formatsQuicktime and Windows Media. The low-speed Quicktime version will open automatically.
