USGS Scientists Honored at the Humic Science and Technology IX ConferenceNortheastern University's Humic Acid Research Group has dedicated the Humic Science and Technology IX Conference, Boston, Massachusetts, March 22-24, 2006, to the work of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Dr. Michael E. Thurman (recently retired from the USGS and now with the Universidad de AlmerÃa, Spain). In addition, USGS scientist Dr. Jerry A. Leenheer has been named honorary chair of the conference. Humic Science and Technology Conferences focus on the structures, properties, and uses of humic substances from any source. Humic substances play a significant role in the facilitated transport of toxic metals, the methylation of mercury to highly toxic methylmercury, the creation of disinfection by-products in drinking water, and the biodegradation of contaminants in ground water.
