Alliance Overview
Delta Safety Society is a non-profit organization that was founded in October,
1942 and celebrates 65 years as one of the oldest organizations of its kind in
the New Orleans metropolitan area. Since 1942, Delta has expanded to include
members from throughout South Louisiana. The current membership represents
employers from various industries such as construction, oil and gas, shipyard,
transportation and process safety management.
OSHA and Delta Safety Society hereby formed an Alliance to provide Delta Safety
Society’s members and others with information, guidance, and access to training
resources that will help them protect employee’s health and safety, particularly
in reducing and preventing exposure to physical hazards, such as falls, struck
by, caught in between and electrical hazards and addressing health related
issues, such as bloodborne pathogens.

- Implementation Team Meetings
Monthly Executive Committee Meetings were held at various restaurants in the New
Orleans Area. Potential Speakers, topics and the upcoming agenda are discussed
concerning the next monthly General Meetings.

Training Schedules from Member facilities were forwarded to the General
Membership as requested.
Various Free Courses were offered by the National Safety Council
Nov 2007 – (Reduced Rate) OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Course
Dec 2007 – (Free) Stress Management and Slips, Trips & Falls Prevention offered
by American Red Cross
Outreach and Communication
- Events
Monthly General Meetings include a Guest Speaker who introduces members and
guest attendees to topics concerning Health, Safety or Environmental issues
and/or current events.
During the meetings a Round Table Form is circulated to allow attendees to
inquire about other topics, concerns or problems they may have affecting their
workplace or employees.
The Executive Committee researches these topics and the requested information is
forwarded. When possible the topics are introduced at later meetings by experts
in that particular field or profession.
These topics included but are not limited to: Welding, Hex Chromium, Shipyard
Safety, Hearing Conservation, Post Traumatic Stress, Recycling, NFPA 70E, Drug
Testing, TWIC and issues concerning a Spanish Work Force.
Delta website was developed as an outreach to the Community and Safety
Professionals. Upcoming events and meetings, past newsletters and general
announcements are always accessible.
Informative Emails and Safety Alerts are distributed to Delta Membership, Guests
and Professional Colleagues.
Employment Opportunities and Job Postings are also forwarded.
July 2007 – Held Open Forum for the U.S. Coast Guard to cover the new Homeland
Security requirements involving the TWIC Cards.
August 2007 – Collected used Cell Phones for a recycling program known as Secure
the Call Foundation
September 2007 – Blood Drive for the Ochsner Blood Bank
Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
- Events
Delta’s current President serves in an Advisory Position on the Board of the
National Safety Council’s Southeast Chapter
Members of the Executive Committee and General Membership participate in the
National Safety Council
Southeast Chapter’s Annual Meeting.
Joint Meetings were held with the American Society of Safety Engineers – ASSE
New Orleans Chapter, including:
Dec 2007 – Former Delta Member and national recognized, Motivational Speaker
Bruce Wilkerson.
- Results
Delta Members now have access to a greater of amount of educational information
and have been exposed the continued efforts of OSHA to reach at-risk industries
by sharing current events, safety alerts and best practices.

Because of Delta’s involvement with this Alliance, President, Edie Tranchina who
is also a member of the Norco Contractor’s Health, Safety, Security &
Environmental (HSSE) Council and Treasurer, Beth Inbau, CEO of the National
Safety Council are both presently pursuing an OSHA Alliance though their
involvement with other organizations.
The OSHA-BRAO Compliance Assistance Specialist (CAS) has provided OSHA Update
presentations and has given presentations at various member workplaces. At each
month’s meeting, the CAS provides literature including educational brochures,
pamphlets and training materials. Topics included but were not limited to: VPP,
Emergency Preparedness, Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Pandemic Flu Preparedness and
Construction Safety.
- Upcoming Milestones
OSHA-10 Hour Construction Safety Course
Delta President to present an award at the Annual National Safety Council
Meeting to the participant with The Most Improved Safety Record.
Joint Alliance meeting with Northrop Grumman, along with the ASSE-New Orleans
Chapter, to present crane operation safety training and hands-on crane simulator
demonstration.
