Dr. Samuel N. Luoma

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Dr. Samuel N. Luoma was awarded the 2003-2004 J. William Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award. Dr Luoma will co-author a book with Dr. Philip Rainbow, Director of Zoology at the British Natural History Museum, on environmental toxicology. The book will focus on the link between environmental science and policy.

Dr. Luoma conducts research on the bioavailability and effects of pollutants in aquatic environments and develops better ways to merge environmental science and policy. Dr. Luoma is a member of the research team for the Toxics Program's investigation of the fate of anthropogenic chemicals in the San Francisco Bay-Delta. His research in the Bay area has focused on the effects of metals and metalloids on the estuary's ecosystems. As part of the CALFED Bay-Delta Program efforts to restore the Bay's degraded ecosystems, Dr. Luoma's research is answering critical questions on the potential effects of metals on aquatic ecosystems. Dr. Luoma has served as the Lead Scientist for the CALFED Bay-Delta Program since 2000.

"The Fulbright Program aims to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs and thereby to increase the chance that nations will learn at last to live in peace and friendship." - Senator J. William Fulbright, 1905-1995

The Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award is awarded each year by the US-UK Fulbright Commission to scholars who are leaders in their field to facilitate research and/or lecturing in the United Kingdom and to enhance mutual understanding between the United States and the United Kingdom. The Commission is part of the Fulbright Program, which is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
