EPA Posts Results from Samples Taken at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Miss.
On Feb. 3, 2006, EPA posted results from samples taken at the Naval Construction Battalion Center facility in Gulfport, Miss., as part of ongoing hurricane cleanup efforts. EPA was testing to see whether the site was impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Five sediment samples were collected from five locations in the wetland area and compared with sampling conducted before Hurricane Katrina. Four additional sediment samples were collected and analyzed for PCBs at the request of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. Based on these sampling results, EPA does not believe the site was impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

EPA Posts Additional Results from Samples Taken at Mississippi Hazardous Waste Site
On Feb. 3, 2006, EPA posted additional data from samples taken at the DuPont-DeLisle plant in Bay St. Louis, Miss. EPA compared samples with sampling conducted before Hurricane Katrina to determine whether the site was impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Five locations were resampled and analyzed only for dioxin/furans. None of the three surface soil samples exceeded residential preliminary remediation goals (PRGs) in the vicinity of the residential development. One of the two sediments samples exceeded the industrial PRG. Original samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), pesticides/PCBs, and metals. Low levels of metals, VOCs, pesticides, and SVOCs were detected in samples and no PCBs were reported. Based on these sampling results, EPA does not believe the site was impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

Information on potentially hazardous situations for returning residents
Flyers are being distributed in affected communities as part of EPA's continuing outreach to help the Gulf Coast region recover. The flyers highlight possible hazardous situation residents may encounter during cleanup.

Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
EPA has released six radio public service announcements (PSAs) warning of potential environmental and health hazards when residents return to their homes and businesses in hurricane impacted areas. The PSA's are a part of EPA's continuing outreach to the affected regions as communities recover. PSA script and audio files are for use by the media and general public. They are also being distributed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to shelters housing evacuees. To view the scripts or listen to the PSAs, visit: http://www.epa.gov/katrina/outreach/

Fuel waiver response to Hurricane Katrina
EPA, in conjunction with the Department of Energy, has responded quickly and decisively to address fuel supply disruptions that are due to refinery and pipeline infrastructure damage in the Gulf Region by issuing emergency waivers of certain fuel standards in areas of the country affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. These temporary waivers have been necessary to help ensure that an adequate supply of fuel is available throughout the country, particularly for emergency vehicle supply needs.
