2009 AAPT High School Physics Photo Contest

Photo Contest Details

The contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12 (or equivalent international grade level). When entering students must:

  • send printed photo
  • register on-line and send printed hard copy from the on-line registration.
  • print out, sign, and return the Contest Rules and Entry Agreement, available in PDF and HTML versions, when submitting their entry. Failure to submit this form will invalidate the contest entry.

Entries are limited to 15 per school each year.

Photos may be entered in one of two categories described below, and will be judged on the quality of the photo and the accuracy of the physics in the explanation that accompanies the photograph.

Categories

Natural_Alexis-BlanchNatural photos are those that involve everyday situations that may demonstrate a variety of physics concepts. Any spontaneous event is considered natural.








Contrived-Paper-Clip_ShilpaContrived photos are those that are set up to show a particular physics concept or related set of concepts. Contrived Photos represent non-spontaneous events.








Photos with Multiple Images

Multiimage_Eric-ZhouPhotos with multiple images or other computer manipulation will be placed in a separate category. They may be displayed at the national meeting and judged for Special Recognition ribbons, but not for prizes.








 

Judging

The 100 finalist photos will be displayed and judged during the 2009 Summer Meeting which will be held at Ann Arbor, MI, July 25-29. If more than 100 entries are received, a group of volunteer physics teachers will determine the 100 best entries. Please read the complete contest rules on the entry form before signing and returning it with your entry. Failure to abide by all rules will result in disqualification.

Entry Period

Entries are welcome anytime beginning March 1 and up to the May 15 deadline. Early entries are encouraged.

Submission Checklist

__ Photo (8 ½ x 11 inches or 8 x 10 inches) with no additional backing attached to the photo
__ CD containing a digital file (preferably jpeg) of the photo.
__ Printed hard copy from the on-line registration
__ Signed copy of the Contest Rules and Entry Agreement form: PDF or HTML
