Certain positions require successful completion of a medical/physical examination prior to selectee being placed in the position. An SF 78, Certificate of Medical Examination, is normally required for assignment to a Federal Wage System position (e.g., carpenter, electronics mechanic, motor vehicle operator, etc.). There are also certain General Schedule positions, such as recreation assistants and construction inspectors, that may have physical and environmental factors that warrant completion of a physical. Physical requirements and environmental factors of a position are identified by the supervisor of the position in conjunction with the Personnel Office.

Once a selection is made, the Personnel Office schedules the selected candidate for a physical at a medical facility. The action cannot be processed until the results of the physical have been evaluated.
