In February 2005, NMFS issued a final rule that provided for the implementation of Amendment 82 to the Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for Groundfish of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area. Amendment 82 establishes a framework for the management of the Aleutian Islands subarea (AI) directed pollock fishery. The FMP Amendment was proposed by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to implement a provision of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2004, which requires that the AI directed pollock fishery be allocated to the Aleut Corporation for the purpose of economic development in Adak, Alaska.
Harvesting vessels and processing entities are nominated by the Aleut Corporation but must be approved by NMFS. Unless specifically exempted by this action, nominees must have all federal permits required to participate in the AI Pollock fishery. NMFS notifies both the Aleut Corporation and nominees of approval results.
