DRUG OFFENDER PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL COURT

CLYDE PEREZ, age 49, a resident of Gretna, Louisiana, pleaded guilty in federal court before U. S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon to being part of a conspiracy trafficking in crack, cocaine, and marijuana, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten today.

According to court documents, PEREZ admitting to being a part of a conspiracy that was in existence for 2006 and much of 2007 which involved the movement of more than 4 ½ kilograms of crack and 500 grams of powder cocaine primarily in the Gretna, Harvey, and Marrero areas. PEREZ, with others, sold both powder and crack cocaine to confidential sources and undercover agents during the summer of 2007. In October of 2007, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation began a Title III wiretap of a co-defendant’s phone. During the wiretap, agents intercepted numerous calls between PEREZ and co-defendants wherein PEREZ bought amounts of crack cocaine for other people. PEREZ admitted that he was responsible for the trafficking of at least 500 grams of crack.

PEREZ was indicted with other co-defendants by a federal grand jury on August 21, 2008. PEREZ, who is presently serving a lengthy sentence for repeat driving while intoxicated, will be sentenced by Judge Fallon on July 1, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. The defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment Co-defendant Marlon Jones previously pleaded guilty before Judge Fallon in this matter on March 11, 2009. The trial for the other co-defendants in the case is scheduled for April 20, 2009.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with law enforcement officers from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Gretna Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin G. Boitmann.
