FORMER U.S. POSTAL SERVICE EMPLOYEE ADMITS STEALING MAIL

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that JORGE COLON, 54, of Waterbury, pleaded guilty today before United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport to one count of theft of mail matter by a postal employee.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, COLON was employed by the United States Postal Service as a senior mail carrier in Newtown, Connecticut.  From October 15, 2008 to November 17, 2008, a video camera was installed in COLON’s postal delivery vehicle.  The video surveillance revealed COLON examining and opening a number of pieces of mail that did not belong to him.  In pleading guilty, COLON admitted that, on November 17, 2008, he opened a letter and removed its contents, which included a greeting card and a Target gift card.

Judge Hall has scheduled sentencing for June 15, 2009, at which time COLON faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

This matter was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General and the Newtown Police Department.  This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah P. Karwan.
