EPA’s inhalation reference concentration (daily inhalational exposure likely to be without an appreciable risk of deleterious effects during a lifetime) for 2-ethoxyethanol is 0.2 mg/m3.
2-Ethoxyethanol is metabolized mainly by alcohol dehydrogenase to ethoxyacetaldehyde and further by aldehyde dehydrogenase to 2-ethoxyacetic acid, metabolites which are thought to be involved in some of the toxic effects.
Studies with human volunteers have demonstrated substantial systemic absorption of 2-ethoxyethanol liquid and vapor through the skin.
The mean half life for the urinary excretion of the metabolite 2-ethoxyacetic acid was reported to be 24 hours after a 4-hour exposure of human volunteers to 2-ethoxyethanol.
