FORMER APD OFFICER CONVICTED OF BANK ROBBERIES

July 28, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

David E. Nahmias, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, and Gregory Jones, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announce that a federal jury returned a guilty verdict against STANLEY STREET, 45, of Jonesboro, Georgia on three counts of armed bank robbery in Atlanta, Georgia, using force, violence, and intimidation, and three counts of using a firearm during these crimes of violence. According to Nahmias and the documents and information presented in court:

Defendant STANLEY STREET, a 17 year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department, was convicted of robbing one branch of the Wachovia Bank in Atlanta, Georgia on June 29, 2004; and for robbing another branch of the Wachovia Bank in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 20, 2004 and a second time on August 31, 2004. Each of these counts had a corresponding count charging STANLEY STREET with using a firearm during these crimes of violence. The federal trial jury convicted STANLEY STREET on all six the counts. Evidence in court showed that Street committed the bank robberies because he was having financial difficulties, both personally and with his private security company, "Atlanta's Finest." Street acted in a particularly violent manner during the robberies.

United States Chief District Judge Orinda Evans set Street's sentencing for Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at 4:30 p.m. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 25 years for each bank robbery and a minimum sentence of 57 years for the three firearms counts.

Accordingly to Nahmias: “This law enforcement officer sworn to protect and serve the public instead robbed a bank at gunpoint once a month for three months. When someone we rely upon to protect the public chooses to endanger it, achieving justice for the victims who faced the danger becomes especially important.”

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the FBI.

Assistant United States Attorney Will Traynor prosecuted the case.
