Industrial Hygiene |

|
Level: |
Masters of Public Health (MPH) & Masters of Science in Public Health (MSPH) |
|
|
Program Description: |
The IH graduate program is designed to provide broad training in public
health, environmental health, biostatistics, and epidemiology. Building on
this public health core, additional IH education and training is required
including subjects such as Occupational health and safety, noise and other
physical agents, ventilation, industrial hygiene chemistry, and occupational
and environmental program management. Numerous other courses are available to
the student as electives and each student creates an individual study plan
with their academic advisor which meets their interests and long term goals.
This comprehensive program enables students to define occupational and
environmental public health problems, identify and evaluate effective
solutions, successfully manage appropriate intervention programs, and
effectively work with stakeholders. Actual case studies are integrated
throughout the curriculum and the student has ample opportunity for hands-on
experience using the latest techniques and equipment to recognize and evaluate
hazards. Practicing industrial hygienists in government, labor and industry
provide practical and philosophical insight into divergent points of view,
governing legislation, and evaluation and compliance requirements. Practicums,
generally under the direction of a board-certified industrial hygienist, may
be arranged with government, labor, or industry throughout the United States
or the world. These experiences allow the student to apply instruction in
actual practice settings. Inclusive in the student’s preparation is the
emphasis on developing applied skills including the capability to think
critically in reviewing technical and scientific materials and effectively
communicating information both orally and through written reports. |

|
Program Description: |
The field of industrial hygiene plays an important
role in the protection of worker health through workplace assessment and interventions. The
training in industrial hygiene is designed to build on the basic skill of engineers and scientists
so that they will be able to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards in the work
place. The development of research skills is also a critical component of the program. The
curriculum includes the public health core courses, and program courses relating to occupational
diseases, exposure assessment, control measures, and assessment of risk. Graduates are expected to
contribute to worker health through their ability to gather data, form opinions, recommend
solutions and interact with management, employees, and the community in implementing the
solutions. Students will have the opportunity to expand their technical base through electives in
the areas of environmental health, industrial safety, risk management, and ergonomics. It is
expected that the students will pursue professional certification. The MSPH in Industrial Hygiene
is accredited by the Related Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering
