REL Northwest – serving Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington – is dedicated to improving learning by building capacity in schools, families, and communities through applied research and technical assistance.  In this pursuit, the Laboratory is conducting two long-term randomized controlled trials, one examining the impact of a trait-based writing model on student achievement and the other studying the impact of a school-wide reading program on student achievement in rural high schools.  Current fast response projects include examinations of state math standards and their alignment with national benchmarks, equitable distribution of teachers, teacher preparation for the instruction of English language learners, preparation and support of new teachers, student-reported aggression in grades 3-8, and a linking study of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) in a state assessment of student learning.  Briefing papers are in development on state GEAR UP implementation, district capacity to meet new high school diploma requirements, and characteristics of school support teams.

Meet REL Northwest

REL Northwest is a keystone contract of the non-profit Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL), one of the original REL contractors from 1966.  The REL work is distributed across four major program units at NWREL, known as Centers of Excellence, with leadership by NWREL’s Office of Planning and Program Coordination and support from the Office of Development and Communications.  Subcontracts with several small businesses provide essential, substantive support:
