Date: March 16, 2009 BLM to Conduct Burns in Dawson CountyThe BLM Miles City Field Office will be burning slash piles in the Sand Creek area of Dawson County approximately seven miles south of Glendive between March 17 and April 30. Burning will occur between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and smoke may be visible. Approximately 50 piles of non-marketable timber and debris will be burned as proper weather conditions permit. The piles are a byproduct of a hazardous fuels reduction project that was conducted after the Box Elder Fire of 2006, which burned about 34 acres in Dawson County. The BLM treated the fire area in order to stabilize soils and salvage marketable timber which included post and pole sales. The overall project is intended to reduce the threat of wildfire spreading from BLM-administered lands onto adjacent private land in this area. The BLM manages more land – 256 million acres – than any other federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
