A recently published Defense Department booklet, "Facing the Future: Meeting the Threats and Challenges of the 21st Century," chronicles the Defense Department’s transformation since 2001.
The booklet is the story of how America went from a nation shocked by a surprise attack to one that brought justice to the perpetrators of 9-11, defeated two state sponsors of terror and liberated more than 50 million people from oppression and fear.
The publication also highlights the transformation of the American military establishment – its forces, its organization and, most importantly, its mindset and culture. It tells of the skill and determination of America’s fighting forces and how their courage and example have ignited a freedom tide that is changing the face of the Middle East.
A series of forthcoming American Forces Press Service news articles will highlight senior defense officials views on these topics. The first in the series features Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who notes people as the key to the transformation process. A Pentagon Channel documentary titled “Facing the Future” records the Defense Department ’s journey to become lighter, leaner and more responsive to world threats.
