Fish Hatchery Construction and Oyster Reseeding

Enhances $2 million appropriation in 2006 for the FWCC to begin construction of seven marine fish hatcheries.

Marine and Coastal Habitat Restoration Projects

Grant applications have been submitted by the State to NOAA for oyster relays and shell planting in the Panhandle and for marine debris removal in the Indian River Lagoon area ($4M).

Wildfire Prevention (enhanced funding for fuel reduction)

Wildfire hazard reduction funding to mitigate hazardous fuels ($.9M). Additional grant proposals have been submitted for forest health and for wood to energy grants ($5M).

Violence Against Women

The STOP Violence Agains Women Program supports communities in their efforts to hire and retain criminal justice and victim services personnel that respond to violence crimes against women as a way to develop and strengthen effective law enforcement, prosecution strategies, and victim services in cases involving violent crimes against women.

Child Support Enforcement

Temporarily (Oct. 2008 - Oct. 2010) allows federal child support incentive funds to be used as part of the state's 34% match of federal dollars that support DOR's Child Support Enforcement Program.

Byrne/JAG Funding

Byrne/JAG grants are for state and local law enforcement to use to prevent and control crime and enhance the criminal justice system. Funds can also be used in the correctional system. Byrne/JAG funding allocations are formula driven based on population and crime statistics. Florida will receive approximately $135.1M of which approximately $106M will go to local units of government either directly or passed through by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Crime Victims Compensation and Crime Victims Assistance Grants

Crime Victims Compensation funds and Crime Victims Assistance grants are channeled through the Department of Legal Affairs. Florida will receive an additional $3.1M for additional victims compensation funds and $1.7M for victim assistance grants.

Weatherization

ARRA allocates $5 billion for Weatherization Assistance Programs (WAPs) across the country. The Weatherization Assistance Program annually provides funds to community action agencies, local governments and non-profit agencies to provide specific program services for low-income families throughout the state. The mission of the program is to reduce the monthly energy burden of low-income households by improving the energy efficiency of the home.

Public Housing Capital Funds

Formula and competitive grants for Public Housing Authorities for housing renovations and energy conservation retrofit investments.

COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services)

COPS funds are allocated directly by the U. S. Dept. of Justice to local level governments and law enforcement agencies and provide a three-year period of funding. COPS hiring grants are awarded through a competitve application process that takes into account the impact of the current economic crisis on applicant agencies as well as crime statistics and plans for initiating and advancing community policing. A total of $1 billion in Recovery Act funds are available nationwide and are expected to create or save 5,500 law enforcement officer positions. State-level law enforcement agencies can apply for the grants.

Competitively awarded gap financing for the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program.
