Summer Jobs for Teens and Young Adults: Placement Services and Job Training Available
Florida’s 24 regional workforce boards invite young adults to apply for participation in a summer employment program funded by recovery funds under the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The program will provide valuable work experience for young adults who meet United States Department of Labor eligibility requirements. The program will vary by local workforce board. Eligible individuals must meet federal low-income requirements. The various summer job training programs will have a positive impact on Florida's economy.
Each workforce board is also seeking employers with the capacity to serve as work experience host sites as well as opportunities for employees to volunteer as mentors and help with job shadowing and other volunteer activities that may be included in the summer jobs program. Businesses interested in participating in the program are encouraged to contact their regional workforce board.
The summer youth program is made available statewide through $43 million in federal stimulus dollars. Local workforce boards will use the dollars to fund the work experience activities for eligible participants. Wages and duration of job placements vary by local workforce board.

Region 1 – Workforce Escarosa (Escambia, Santa Rosa)
The Workforce Escarosa program will provide work experience for up to 350 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting June 2009. Participants will earn $7.25 per hour for up to 40 hours a week for a maximum of 12 weeks.

Region 2 – The Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton
The Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton Counties program will provide work experience for 150 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting June 15. Participants will earn performance incentives of up to $550 for up to 24 hours a week for a maximum of four weeks.

Region 3 – Chipola Regional Workforce Planning Board (Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, Washington)
The Chipola Regional Workforce Planning Board program will provide work experience for at least 170 young adults in local jobs starting in June. Participants may earn up to $200 per week plus an end-of-program bonus of up to $100 for a four-day work week of seven hours per day. The program lasts a minimum of four weeks. The summer work experience program is available to eligible young people ages 14 to 18. An on-the-job training program will be available to eligible young adults ages 18 to 24.

Region 4 – Gulf Coast Workforce Development Board (Bay, Franklin, Gulf)
The Gulf Coast Workforce Development Board program will provide work experience for 260 to 300 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting May 18. Positions for younger participants have already been filled. Applications are still being accepted for participants aged 18 to 24 who can earn a $125 weekly incentive payment upon satisfactory completion of the program, in addition to potential income depending on job assignment.

Region 5 - Workforce Plus (Gadsden, Leon, Wakulla)
The Workforce Plus program, Summer Connect, will provide work experience for an estimated 500 young adults ages 16 to 24 in local jobs starting June 15. Participants will earn $7.25 per hour for up to 32 a week for a maximum of eight weeks.

The North Florida Workforce Development Board program will provide work experience for 75 young adults ages 16 to 21 in local jobs starting June 8. Participants will earn up to $7.25 per hour for 32 hours a week for at least 11 weeks.

Region 7 - Florida Crown Workforce Board (Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Union)
The Florida Crown Workforce Board program will provide work experience for 75 to 80 young adults ages 17 to 24 in local jobs starting June 1, 2009. Participants will earn $7.25 per hour for up to 30 hours a week for a maximum of six weeks.

The WorkSource program will provide work experience for 1,200 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting June 29. Participants will earn $7.25 per hour for up to 20 a week for a maximum of six weeks.

The FloridaWorks program will provide work experience for 500 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting June 15. After completing training, participants will earn $7.50 per hour for up to 100 hours between June 15 and August 8.

Region 10 – Citrus Levy Marion Regional Workforce Development Board
The Citrus Levy Marion Regional Workforce Development Board program will provide work experience for 450 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting in June. Applications must be received by May 29. Participants will receive a training allowance for a maximum of six weeks.

The Center for Business Excellence’s program will provide work experience for 360 to 400 young adults ages 16 to 24 starting in June 2009. Participants will earn wages and/or stipends depending upon the program and location of the work experience.

Region 12 - Workforce Central Florida (Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Sumter counties)
Workforce Central Florida’s program will provide work experience for 1,200 young adults ages 16 to 24 in local jobs starting June 22, 2009. Participants will earn $8 per hour for up to 35 hours a week for a maximum of 24 weeks.
Targeted businesses include government agencies, non-profits and private industry employers in healthcare, green, emerging and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) occupations.

Region 13 – Brevard Workforce Development Board
The Brevard Workforce Development Board program will provide work experience for 200 young adults ages 18 to 24 in local jobs starting June 1 and August 1. Participants will earn $7.25 per hour for up to 30 hours a week for a maximum of eight weeks.

Region 14 – WorkNet Pinellas
The WorkNet Pinellas program will provide work experience for 650 young adults in local jobs. Starting and ending dates vary. Participants can earn up to $600 a week for a maximum.

Region 15 – Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance (Hillsborough)
The Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance program will provide work experience for 760 young adults starting June 15 through August 13. Participants will earn $145 per week or receive wages based on placement at an on-the-job training work site. There are two tracks:
17 to 19-year-olds - 20 hours per week, for a total of four weeks
20 to 24-year-olds - 40 hours per week, average 12 weeks

The Pasco Hernando Workforce Board’s program will provide work experience for approximately 400 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting June 15, 2009. Participants will earn $7.25 per hour for up to 25 hours a week for a maximum of six weeks.

Region 17 – Polk County Workforce Development Board
The Polk County Workforce Development Board program will provide work experience for 300 young adults ages 16 to 24 in local jobs that will begin with a Youth Workforce Summit in mid-May, followed by a work experience program in mid-June. Participants will earn $8 per hour for up to 30 hours a week for a maximum of six weeks.

The Suncoast Workforce Board program will provide work experience for 400 young adults ages 16 to 21 in local jobs starting June 15. Participants will earn a training incentive equivalent to $7.25 per hour for up to 20 hours a week for a maximum of five weeks.

The Heartland Workforce program will provide work experience for 200 to 300 young adults ages 14 to 24 in local jobs starting June1. Participants will earn either $7.25 per hour or weekly stipends, depending on the work assignment, for up to 30 hours a week for a maximum of six weeks.

About Recovery Funds for Job Placement and Training
Governor Charlie Crist announced the availability of the funds on March 20, 2009. They are part of the $165 million in federal economic stimulus funds provided to local workforce boards to address their local communities’ needs.
The use of the funds is based on state and federal funding formulas, with a strong emphasis on efficiently and effectively deploying the resources in a timely manner to help accelerate economic recovery.
Over the next three years, the funds will be used as follows:
- $43 million for youth services, including summer employment.
- $19 million in adult workforce services, such as job placement and training programs.
- $81 million in workforce services for dislocated workers, including those who have been laid off or whose employer has closed or gone out of business.
- $22 million in employment services at the state’s One-Stop Career Centers.
