Arthritis Foundation Response: Policy Recommendations and Priorities

The Arthritis Foundation is working to help address the impact of this chronic disease through the proposal of new legislation.
The Arthritis Foundation has recommended to Congress that the CDC Arthritis Program be increased b$10 million for a total appropriation of $23 million. That’s 50 cents per American with arthritis.
Every state in this nation deserves CDC arthritis funding to reduce the amount of pain and disability this disease is causing.
The CDC currently receives enough federal government funds to support prevention efforts in 12 states.
The Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act (H.R. 1210) proposes to strengthen arthritis public health
initiatives to ensure that more people are diagnosed early to avoid pain and permanent disability

CDC Response: Expanding Reach through State Programs

During the current 2008 to 2011 funding cycle, the CDC will be providing funds to 12 states at an average level of $500,000 per year as part of four-year cooperative agreements. This funding improves the capacity of each state’s arthritis programs to:

Monitor the prevalence of arthritis in their communities.

Broaden each state’s public awareness efforts.

Make evidence based interventions available to more people.

The 12 states are California, Florida, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.
