MIAMI TAX PREPARER CHARGED WITH FRAUD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Michael E. Yasofsky, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation announced the arrest and unsealing of a 38-count indictment charging defendant Ania Morales, a/k/a Ania Labrada, of Miami, Florida with tax fraud.

The Indictment alleges that Morales aided the filing of a false tax return, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(2), and filed a false tax return, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(1). The case will be heard before United States District Court Judge Paul C. Huck.

According to the Indictment, from 2003 through 2005, defendant Morales operated a tax preparation service from her residence under the names Ania Morales and Associates, Labrada Inc., and Melrose Place Consulting. The defendant served as the return preparer for over 1,000 income tax returns during these years. The defendant prepared at least 37 tax returns on behalf of clients that falsely claimed employee business expenses, education deductions, and income tax withholding. Additionally, she filed at least one tax return on her own behalf that falsely claimed her annual wages and income tax withholding.

If convicted of all counts, the defendant Morales faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a $100,000 fine on each of the charges.

Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Internal Revenue Services, Criminal Investigation. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey E. Tsai.
