Homeland Security undersecretary visits NSSL

The Undersecretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, Michael D. Brown, toured the NOAA Weather Partners Friday, including the National Severe Storms Laboratory. Gary Jones, Acting Regional Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Region 6 accompanied him.

Under Secretary Brown's visit started with a presentation by Harold Brooks, NSSL Research Meteorologist, about the increasing percentage of tornado deaths in mobile homes.

Then Doug Forsyth, Chief of the Radar Research and Development Division at NSSL, showed him the phased array radar facility and discussed plans for research with the radar that could significantly improve severe weather forecasts and warnings.

Undersecretary Brown also toured the Storm Prediction Center and the National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office.

The visit was covered by local media including the NBC, CBS and FOX affiliates in Oklahoma City, and the Norman Transcript.
