Coordinated School Health Programs and Academic Achievement: A Systematic Review of the Literature [pdf 279K]. Paper by Murray, Low, Cross, Davis, Hollis, Adetunji (Journal of School Health, November 2007). This report examines how school health program interventions that fit within the eight Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) components improve academic success among students. The authors conclude that school health programs hold promise for improving academic outcomes for students.
Physical Education and Academic Achievement in Elementary School: Data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Paper by Carlson, Fulton, Lee, Maynard, Brown, Kohl, and Dietz (American Journal of Public Health). This study examined the association between time spend in physical education and academic achievement in a longitudinal study of students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A small but significant benefit for academic achievement in mathematics and reading was observed for girls enrolled in higher amounts (70�0 min/wk) of physical education (referent: 0� min/wk). Higher amounts of physical education were not positively or negatively associated with academic achievement in boys. Overall, physical education participation did not appear to negatively affect academic achievement in other subjects in elementary school students.
