Cordes' major areas of research management include ecology of migratory birds, research designs for ecosystems, restoration ecology, herpetology, and genetic applications in conservation research. Cordes was previously a member of the graduate faculty of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he taught graduate courses in animal ecology and quantitative ecology.
