San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is in a unique location. A large portion of the park is within the city limits of the city of San Antonio, a city with a population of over 1.5 million people.

Environmental factors such as air quality, disturbed lands, hydrologic activity, nonnative species, pests, scenic vistas, soundscape/noise, and water quality have been influenced to varying degrees by the people that live in this area.

Cochineal is an insect hidden under what looks like white spit on prickly pear cacti.

Did You Know?
that the Spanish cornered the market on cochineal, a bug that produces a vivid red color, early in the Spanish colonial period? British officer coats, with which every American school child is familar, were dyed using cochineal.
