Cancer, Reproductive, and Cardiovascular DiseasesOutputs: ProductsThe CRC has many types of products utilized to enhance and promote research and awareness of occupational health problems related to cancer, reproductive health, and cardiovascular, renal, and neurologic disease. Some examples include: Risk AssessmentsNIOSH history in cancer risk assessment extends back to 1987. Since then, NIOSH has been particularly active in cancer risk assessment, with cancer risk assessments conducted for exposure to diesel exhaust particulates, radiation, asbestos, silica, methylene chloride, 1,3-butadiene, formaldehyde, refractory ceramic fibers, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and, most recently, titanium dioxide. Presentations in Public ForumsThe CRC presented information at the President's Cancer Panel Conference on Avoidable Causes of Cancer held 7-8 April 1994 in Bethesda, Maryland. Information was presented concerning the need for better assessment of the effectiveness of information dissemination concerning occupational cancer, along with discussion of the need for greater understanding of the barriers to implementation of the information by workers and management and improved hazard surveillance. http://www.ehponline.org/members/1995/Suppl-8/fine-full.html Internet PagesWithin the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), the CRC has had teams addressing issues related to the definition and implementation of a national occupational reproductive research agenda for reproductive health. For example, a workshop was held on May 8-9, 2002 in Washington, DC to bring together researchers who study worker populations and those who are developing/validating new biotechnologies in order to foster collaborations and promote effective application of methodologies for better understanding of occupational cancer. Individual ReportsThe NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program conducts investigations of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths to formulate recommendations for preventing future deaths and injuries. As a part of this CRC Program, scientists investigate cardiovascular fatalities and assess the contribution of personal (including individual risk factors for coronary artery disease) and workplace factors in these cardiovascular deaths. Products from these investigations include reports which can be found at the Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program homepage by using the database to search the reports for those related to the “Cardiac” category. |
