- Green Is the Theme at Women’s History Month Exhibition: An upcoming Women’s History Month exhibit in Lafayette, La., will showcase the talent of local women artists through the theme of environmental consciousness. Titled “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet: Art Goes ‘Green,’” it is the second annual Women’s History Month exhibition sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wetlands Research Center. An opening reception, which will be held March 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will be an opportunity for the public to view the art and meet the artists. The showing will also be open to the public March 16–20, 2009, at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center, 700 Cajundome Blvd., Lafayette, La. - NWRC to Participate in National Science Teachers’ Association Annual Conference: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Library and Education and Outreach personnel will attend the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Annual Conference in New Orleans, La. on March 19-22, 2009. - NWRC Director Invited to Speak at Louisiana Wildlife Federation Convention: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Director Gregory Smith was invited as a guest speaker at the Board of Directors luncheon at the Louisiana Wildlife Federation Convention in West Monroe, La., on February 28, 2009. Smith is a member of the National Wildlife Federation Board of Directors and presented information on USGS science in the Mississippi Delta. (Gregory Smith, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8501)
- NWRC Represented at Workshop Concerning Sea Level Rise: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Branch Chief Scott Wilson participated in the stakeholders’ workshop on Sea Level Change and Climate Planning Needs for the Mississippi/Alabama region in Biloxi, Miss., on March 11, 2009. - NWRC Hosts Seminar in Honor of African American History: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) hosted a seminar on March 5, 2009 entitled “Goree Island: The Shackles of Memory.” Danielle Fontenette, curator of the African American Museum in St. Martinville, La., discussed its various exhibits and projects, their twinning with the city of Goree in Senegal, West Africa, and the medical mission trips to Goree Island. Dr. Sybil Jackson Carter, Associate Professor of French at Southern University, discussed her university’s collaboration with the museum and the medical mission team on the Study Abroad Program to Goree in 2006 and 2007. - USGS Scientist Presents Information on Sea-level Rise Models: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Branch Chief Thomas Doyle was invited to address the annual program managers meeting for the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) held in Washington, DC on February 23-26, 2009. Doyle’s presentation was entitled “Sea-level rise models for coastal planning.” (Thomas Doyle, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8647)
- NWRC Hosts Representative from the National Water Quality Laboratory: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientist Ken Krauss hosted Gary Cottrell of the National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) in Denver on March 10, 2009. - NWRC Staff Attend Two Conferences Related to the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII): USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Library personnel working on the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Central Southwest and Gulf Coast project recently participated in two NBII hands-on conferences. The Developers Conference was held in December 2008 in Denver, Colo., and the Content Managers Conference was held in February 2009 in Baltimore, Md. (Linda Broussard, Lafayette, La., 337-266-8692)
- NWRC Represented at Louisiana Library Association Annual Conference: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Library personnel attended the Louisiana Library Association (LLA) Annual Conference in Baton Rouge, La., on March 12-14, 2009. - NWRC Volunteers Participate in MAA Conference: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) volunteers Jared Guilbeaux, Geoff Goudeaux, Antony Mai, and Brandon Dejean participated in the Louisiana/Mississippi Sectional Conference of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in Clinton, Miss., on March 5-7, 2009. Mai presented information on a three-stage model for green tree frogs and won first prize in the student paper competition. Goudeaux presented information on the derivation of probability function for tag retention in frogs. Both discussions were based upon research conducted at NWRC. - Students Visit NWRC: USGS National Wetlands Center (NWRC) contractors Patrick Boland and Courtney Schaneville hosted a group of twenty students from Acadiana High School on March 9, 2009. Students received a presentation on Louisiana’s wetlands and then toured NWRC where they learned about the creation of maps and also viewed experiments with various plants and animals.
