- NWRC Staff Attend Coastal Sustainability Agenda Workshop: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) staff Tom Doyle and Greg Steyer attended the Coastal Sustainability Agenda Workshop entitled Grand Challenges in Coastal Resiliency I, Transforming Coastal Inundation Modeling to Public Security at Louisiana State University on January 20-21. - NWRC Hosts Architectural Class for Coastal Information Tour: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientists Chris Wells and Tommy Michot and contractors Heather Baldwin and Dayna Price hosted an architectural class from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for a tour focusing on mapping, geographic information systems and coastal information. - NWRC Staff Attend Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and Ducks Unlimited Ceremony and Press Conference: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Director Gregory Smith and Acting Assistant Director Gaye Farris attended the ceremony on January 27 in Lake Charles, La., where the CPRA and Ducks Unlimited announced a cooperative endeavor agreement in which the two will work to build $3 million in marsh terraces in Cameron Parish, La. The project is expected to improve water quality, encourage native vegetation growth, reduce wave erosion, and reduce saltwater intrusion. Governor Bobby Jindal, CPRA Chairman Garret Graves, Ducks Unlimited representatives, volunteers, and other state officials as well as media, interested stake holders, and parish officials were in attendance. - NWRC Staff Meet with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to Discuss Joint Projects: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) staff Scott Wilson and Craig Conzelmann; Chris Cretini (USGS Geologic Information Office); and contactor Marc Comeaux met with USACE Mobile District on January 26 to discuss joint coastal geographic information system and visualization projects, including the Delta Research and Global Observation Network (DRAGON) initiative. - NWRC Staff Meet with Gulf of Mexico Alliance Team: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) staff Scott Wilson and Craig Conzelmann; Chris Cretini (USGS Geologic Information Office); and contactor Marc Comeaux met with the interagency Governors’ Gulf of Mexico Alliance Habitat Identification Technical Team on January 26 to discuss future data integration projects for the Gulf of Mexico region that support the action plan. Other agencies attending were National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Special Projects Office, National Coastal Data Development Center, and the National Marine Fisheries Service; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Texas A&M University. - NWRC Staff Participate in Career Expo: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) contractors Gabrielle Bodin, Patrick Boland, and Evelyn Anemaet, educated tenth graders from Lafayette, Iberia, St. Martin, and Vermilion Parishes about careers at NWRC at the 2009 Career Connections Expo in Lafayette, La.
