- Governor to Attend Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and Ducks Unlimited Ceremony and Press Conference at USGS National Wetlands Research Center: The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and Ducks Unlimited will announce a cooperative endeavor agreement on January 27 in which the two will work to build $3 million in marsh terraces in Cameron Parish, La., to improve water quality, encourage native vegetation growth, reduce wave erosion, and reduce saltwater intrusion. Governor Bobby Jindal, CPRA Chairman Garret Graves, Ducks Unlimited representatives, volunteers, and other state officials will be in attendance. - NWRC Scientist to Present Information on Island Applesnails to National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Invasive Species Working Group (ISWG): USGS National Wetlands Research Center scientist Jacoby Carter will present “Preliminary studies on invasive island applesnails in southern Louisiana” to the ISWG during a phone-Web presentation on January 29. All participants of the ISWG work on (or are interested in) invasive species research or information management, and are in government, academia, non-governmental organizations, or the private sector. - NWRC Scientists Participate in the 2009 Southern Division of the American Fisheries Society Meeting: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) geographer Yvonne Allen presented “Assessment of inundation extent and quality in the Atchafalaya Basin Floodway System 1983-2008 using Landsat Imagery” at the meeting held in New Orleans, La., January 15 – 18. - NWRC Director Presents at the Great Lakes Urban Habitat Restoration Symposium: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Director Gregory Smith presented “Wetlands and people: harmonizing the urban and natural landscapes” at the meeting held in Chicago, Ill., January 22 – 23. - NWRC Scientists Participate in the Fall 2008 Cooperator’s Meeting: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) scientists Thomas Doyle and Clint Jeske participated in the meeting for the USGS Louisiana Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge January 22 to discuss research. - NWRC Director Meets with State Department and DOI Officials Concerning DRAGON: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Director Gregory Smith and other DOI and USGS officials met on January 14, 2009 in Washington, D. C., with Claudia McMurray, Assistant Director of the State Department, Jeff Miotke, State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science, Bureau of Oceans, and staff regarding the Delta Research and Global Observation Network (DRAGON) project. The DOI representative was Tim Petty, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Water and Science. In addition to Smith, USGS was represented by Susan Haseltine, Associate Director for Biology, and Virginia Burkett, Chief Scientist for Global Change Research. They discussed a science and technology memorandum of understanding with Vietnam; climate change; nations involved with the DRAGON project; and a DRAGON global summit planned for June 2009 in Cambodia. - NWRC Director Meets with International Crane Foundation (ICF) to Plan DRAGON Global Summit: USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Director Gregory Smith met with representatives of ICF, including director of field ecology Jeb Barzen, January 24 – 25 in Baraboo, Wis., to plan for the Delta Research and Global Observation Network (DRAGON) Global Summit to be held in Siem Reap, Cambodia June 22 – 26, 2009.
