- USGS National Wetlands Research Center Hosts Workshop on Lidar: On April 23, USGS scientist Elijah Ramsey and USGS contractor Amina Rangoonwala coordinated a workshop presented by Sanborn Map Company on Lidar (light detection and ranging). Over 40 participants from Federal, State, and municipal agencies and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Louisiana State University attended. The trainers covered how Lidar operates and how to obtain Lidar data; gave an overview of the software; and answered questions from the participants about specific applications. - USGS Scientist Receives Conservation Award: USGS scientist Virginia Burkett received the Southeastern Regional Director’s Conservation Award from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Atlanta, May 12. The award recognized Burkett for her scientific work on climate change and for helping natural resource managers understand and anticipate potential impacts in the Southeastern United States. - USGS Scientist Is Instructor for EPA Watershed Webcast: On May 13, USGS scientist Virginia Burkett was an instructor for a Watershed Academy Webcast on wetlands and climate change presented by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water. Burkett is a lead author on the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third and Fourth Assessment Reports (2001 and 2007) and the forthcoming IPCC Technical Paper on Water (2008). - USGS Scientist Discussed Climate Change Impacts on Transportation: On May 15, USGS scientist Virginia Burkett met with the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and planners and elected officials from southeast Texas to present highlights from a report about climate change impacts on transportation in the central Gulf Coast region. The DOT study, done in partnership with USGS and State and local researchers, is one of the 21 “synthesis and assessment” reports produced as part of the U. S. Climate Change Science Program. - USGS Scientist Met with Chesapeake Bay Commission: On May 9, USGS scientist Virginia Burkett met with the Chesapeake Bay Commission in Washington, D. C. She presented information on climate change trends, projections, and potential effects on the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. The Commission is a policy leader in the restoration of the Bay and is made up of members of the state legislatures from Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
