USGS Scientist Leads Global Delta Science Network Effort in Vietnam: USGS National Wetlands Research Center Director Gregory Smith is in Vietnam (May 12- May 23) to meet with co-project leaders there to design and implement a science information system for the major coastal deltas of the world. The Center's Delta Science Network is being designed to inform restoration and recovery in the Mississippi Deltaic Plain following the hurricanes of 2005. Specifically, coastal storms and hurricanes in the Mississippi River delta region have prompted new research efforts. The Mekong River delta in Vietnam offers a unique comparative model to understand large river delta systems when compared with the Mississippi River. Smith will work with Vietnamese scientists to construct models of coastal deltaic processes as part of the USGS post-hurricane research effort. Smith is leading this effort and coordinating with university, State, and other Federal research agencies. Understanding large river deltas is a critical part of the USGS Science Mission to provide information for ecological restoration programs. (Gaye Farris, Lafayette, LA, 337-266-8550)
USGS Science Centers Prepare for Hurricane Season: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center (Lafayette, LA) in conjunction with the Louisiana Water Science Center (Baton Rouge, LA) conducted a hurricane drill for its employees last week. The drill consisted of an all-hands meeting with all field stations calling in, a mock drill to attend to all equipment including boats and the Science Response Vehicle, a fire drill, and a call-in procedure to simulate an evacuation; about 130 federal employees called in; contractors had their own company procedures to follow. U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel from Louisiana and Texas were on hand to observe the activities. The drill went well and is being followed up with a lessons learned exercise and minor corrective actions. Coincidently, the drill took place the same day that the first storm was named, subtropical storm Andrea. (Gaye Farris, Lafayette, LA, 337-266-8550)
