Senator Landrieu to Speak at Women’s History Month Event: On March 23 at 3:00 p.m. the USGS National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, LA, will host a celebration honoring “Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams,” the national theme of Women’s History Month. U. S. Senator from Louisiana Mary Landrieu will give the keynote address, and newspaper journalist Jan Risher will give a presentation, “Dayhop, Buhrstone and Other Words that Matter.” Honored guests will be seven women mayors from surrounding communities. Debbie Norling, who serves as Federal Women’s Program Liaison for the USGS Central Region Special Emphasis Programs Advisory Committee, planned the celebration for the Federal community in the Lafayette area. USGS Offers Mentoring for USFWS: Diane Knudson, computer training coordinator at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Conservation Training Center (Shepherdstown, WV), recently spent several days at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) in Lafayette, LA. She came to interview and job shadow NWRC information branch chief Gaye Farris as part of a USFWS leadership training program in which she is participating. As part of Knudson’s interest in women leaders in communications, Knudson also interviewed Central Region Publishing Manager Terry D’Erchia, who was visiting NWRC regarding the progress of the Publishing Service Center located there. Media Inquiries

On March 9, USGS ecologist Tom Doyle was interviewed by Diane Esterbrook for a special hour-long Nightly Business Report program that will air April 10 on PBS. Doyle and Esterbrook walked the Coquille Trail at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in New Orleans and discussed the impacts of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the park as well as the restoration of wetlands in the Mississippi Delta region.
